Many words in English double up both as a noun and adjective as well as a verb. When used as a noun the stress is usually on the first syllable and as a verb the stress shifts to the second syllable.
Look at how the word "contract" is pronounced in these two sentences:
I did not sign a contract with them.
Metals expand with heat and contract with cold.
Now take care where you place the stress in the following words:
| Noun | Verb |
| Record | record |
| Contest | contest |
| Export | export |
| Perfect | perfect |
| Permit | permit |
| Progress | progress |
| Survey | survey |
