Floating platform for River Hongbao
The annual River Hongbao festivities kicked off at the floating platform at Marina Bay on Saturday evening. I was there after my reunion dinner with my family.
There are 680 red lanterns on display - all part of the elaborate lighting installations. The picture above shows the gateway to the 680 red lanterns.
The theme of River Hongbao 2009 is niu zhuan qian kun(扭转乾坤), a Chinese proverb which means turning an unfavourable situation to your advantage - a reference to the global economic downturn.
It is also a reference to the coming Year of the Golden Ox, with the first word of the proverb a play on the word for ox.
God of fortune or wealth is a popular figurine displayed in many places in Asia, especially during Chinese new year. That is because his presence confers fabulous lock and is considered a very auspicious symbol.
He is always seen carrying pile of gold ingots or treasure and bestow upon those who see him. People normally do not sweep the floor during New Year as they fear they might have sweep away the visiting god of fortune and thus , the fortune.
Over here in River Hongbao, the God of fortune is a must have display year after year since its first launch in 23 years ago.
Another interesting display that was featured is the terracotta Army(兵马俑) in the style of gigantic Chinese Chess. I was admiring the displays in total awe.
This legendary character was one of the many that captures my attention. It was the legendary character Guan Yu (关羽)in the Romance of the 3 Kingdoms.
